Your installer is talking cobblers.
In Hertford a 60 cm dish will be ok for Astra 1 & Hotbird. All the old satelites have been pensioned off and the new ones give us nice strong signals. You *might* want to go up to 70cm or 80cm just to give you bad weather rain fade margin DONT think about putting anything bigger than a minidish on a chimney unless you want the stack to end up in bed with you one stormy night!

If you look at the coloured circles you will see a number, if you look at the key on the left hand side that number equates to the size of dish required for you to receive those channels.
As you can see the UK gets the highest signal hence you only require a small dish to receive those channels, even a Sky mini dish can receive them. However if you plan to use one dish, and 2 LNB's, to receive both Astra 2, 28.2E, and Astra 1, 19.2E, you will need a bigger dish. If you want to add more satellites in future you might consider going for something like a Fracarro penta 85cm. Alternatively you could just put up a second small dish just for Astra 1, 19.2E. Where is your current Sky dish situated? If you have an open South facing garden, something every satellite hobbyist dreams of, you can fit a motorized dish, at ground level, and check out all the available satellites, and FTA channels. |

Hi Mickha,
I understand how the diagrams work now but don't understand the difference between the two, Astra 1H and Astra 1L at 19.2E and also do these diagrams assume the dish is pointing exactly at the satellite? I mean if the dish is pointing completely the wrong way then surely it is pointless how big a dish you have as it won't catch the signal? So the point I am trying to understand is would my dish point between the 2 satellites to be the optimum place to capture both signals? The other point you make is I need a bigger dish than the 45cm one just to fit two LNBs, how much bigger a dish would I need to accommodate the extra gizmos? Cheers Matt |

You can point the dish midway beteween two satellites and still pick them both up. 19E and 13E are a good example. This is because the LNBs are not place at the focus but at the side a bit.
What is your current requirement for satellites, position wise? Is is 13E,19E and 28E? or is it 13E and 19E? or 19E and 28E. What you want determines dish size.

It can be done on a zone 2 minidish, reasonably well, with 19E on the focus, if small is the main priority. But an 80cm would be better.

When you say reasonably well, what does this mean, lessor quality? also, just looked up zone 2 size and it is 57cm which is better than 80, would I be able to fit the 2 LNBs on this? Also, why do you say 19e on the focus when just previously I was told I should point between the two satellites rather than focus at one?

Finally, Engineer is coming round to fit my new 60cm dish with 2 LNBs. He did question my request for a transparent dish though saying they clog up with bird droppings!
Man from Virgin also coming round to install cable and they are giving me virgin tv for 'free' so how do I get the virgin cable into the satellite cable? these will mean I have freesat, astra 18 channels plus virgin tv, I won't leave the sofa!!! |
