i got this from a ps3 forum what do you guys think , shell i give it a try ???........
For anyone that might be having a similar problem. By fixed, I mean cleaned the lens. Here's the story: A couple of months ago my PS3 (Uk launch 60 gig) stopped reading BluRay discs, both movies and games but not PS2 or DVDs. It was a slow, gradual thing. Even though it was out of warranty by almost a year Sony kindly fixed it for free. My mate (Uk 60 gig about six months newer than mine) wasn't so lucky though. Sony told him that he'd have to pay 145 quid plus VAT, so that's nearly 170 quid. Cheaper here at 99 quid. I bought a Bluray He wasn't signed up to Continous Play and he was out of warranty so on my advice he decided to let me have a bash at sorting it using a couple of tutorials off the net. There's a fair few but I used these two: http://www.llamma.com/PS3/repair/PS3...y_tutorial.htm Reveal Info: YouTube - Cleaning PS3 Blu-ray drive lens It's at times a bit of a fiddly affair but it's not like I'm a watchmaker so I don't see why any other average person couldn't do the same thing. I used a T10 torx screwdriver, (I did hear I needed a security one but it turned out I didn't) a set of those small screwdrivers and an average sized pozidrive, oh and a cotton bud to clean the lens with and that's about it. I didn't use cleaning fluid, the lens didn't look dirty and neither did the bud after I'd wiped it. [edit]26th April: Obviously I didn't do that good a job of cleaning the lens as it started packing in again. He brought it back round last night and I used some aftershave (didn't have any cleaning fluid) on a cotton bud. Works perfectly again. So far....[/edit] Some things I've heard: Sony won't fix your PS3 if you have a go yourself and fail. Don't know if that's true or not. You can't sign up for Continous Play if you've already told Sony about the fault and given 'em your serial number. Again, I don't know if that's true. I'm not a hundred percent certain that a dirty lens is always the problem when the PS3 stops reading discs. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________ Before cleaning he had a 100 percent failure rate with regards to it reading discs including PS2, PS1 and DVDs. After having the console on for about ten minutes and it warming up there was more chance of it working. I guessed this might be down to some condensation (with dirt) on the lens. After cleaning, so far, fingers crossed, he hasn't had any problems. Good luck to anyone who gives it a bash and I hope this help. |
