I was wondering if their is any possible way to play PS2 games on a PAL 40GB PS3 console? I know the 80GB is software emulation so maybe their is some sort of software implementation that could be put into use for the 40GB version?
Thanks. |

I know the 60Gb plays PS2 games because it's got the PS2
hardware in it. The 80GB emulates PS2 games through software but the 40Gb version doesn't play them at all (unless there's something out there that will put software emulation on it). |

I could get a PS2 but I already have this PS3, an XBox 360 and a Wii so I don't want to be buying more consoles lol.

no it's not possibe at the moment because the emulation chip was removed from later ps3 models to save on production costs. There are alot of emulators in development but nothing is remotely close to being complete, although rumour has it that sony themselves might be implementing some kind of firmware update down the line that might enable the limited use of PS2 games on the PS3, but this is just rumour at the moment.
Currently you need a 1st gen 60gb+ PS3 to play PS2 games, but has been mentioned, the quality is not great and you'd be better off playing the games on a PS2, I still have mine set up next to my PS3, I probably use it more than my PS3 for gaming, the PS3 is primarily for blu-ray and playing videos over the home network from my pc. |

Why would they remove it from later PS3 models? PS2 game playability is available in the 60GB (hardware) and 80GB (software) models. The 40GB version never has been able to play PS2 games as it has neither the software emulation or the hardware to do so. I don't mind, I will just sell my console and I might buy myself the slim PS3 when it comes out.

NTSC 60GB plays ~100% of PS2 games (PS2's CPU and GPU installed); PAL 60GB plays ~70% of PS2 games (only PS2's GPU installed). |
