what do u think about the ITU idea of defining common standards for the IPTV Set top box??

i think it's a great idea.. it lets people to use open iptv decoders, instead of using specific decoder rented by the broadcasters!

but .. .which standars (transmission and technical) should be used for an optimum service???

It is a good idea, and it pretty much has to happen. Why should we be have to get data via the telephone cable, over a satellite or over someones private cable network? It would open up so much business for everyone if there was one central high speed data connection going into each home that carried voice, data and media.

When it comes to standards, thats a tricky one. It needs to be as universal as possible. For example, we dont need to constrain the idea to UK based providers. If the standards allowed it, we could be able to get media and services from all over the world, from anyone we choose.

Do you think something like the "Popcorn hour" would fit the bill ?,not got one myself,but if it would work on the bbc i-player etc,may get myself one for xmas!!
