starting point please

Ok my head is totally messed up now, i have had a few pointers as to what i need for flashing the scientific atlantic (webster) 2100r2, so got my JTAG cable and searched the forums for a starting point, typed in jtag tut, and got so many different threads but no actual tut, all were fine in their own right but for a newbie who has just opened up his first modem and is sitting with a Jtag cable scratching his b**ls, its a tad confusing, cockneysean was on about JTAG cable and JTAG utility is all it takes but i cant seem to find exactly where to start with it, just point me to the starting point please and i'll get it from there, thanks in anticipation
