Default Booster

Another "not really a PC related post".

RC1 allowed me to try Win 7 on one of the other MCE's, it worked well which surprised me as I though the spec would be too old.

Then it dawned on me I could get another FDTV, to keep her indoors happy.

Got one and run another cable from a 5 way splitter (all I had) I've put in before the cable modem. The cable run is about 25ft. Cable modem still fine. From memory, the cable comes in, gets split in the loft one to the modem, the other goes to the wall plate and has two outlets. So, it's split for the modem (by VM), then split again (by me) for the modem and the other PC.

The signal (FDTV Support tool) is lower and I'm getting breakups on some channels, and occasional "Weak Signal" messages from 7MC.

Just tried an old signal booster had lyng round - no joy, but I read that you need a "special" one for cable?

Would a booster work, or is it the splitter, or the length of the cable run? It's good quality cable, carefully run (by me ).

S'pose I cud try my PC on her aerial...

Default Re: Booster

I had this when we got some "friend" who worked for VM to wire up our house. Split lots at the box outside on the wall! We suffered signal problems and got boosters that helped but then for some reason the signal got worse again and this time it was solved by removing the boosters... Makes no sense but i also went and tidied up the wiring outside and found some of the connectors had gone a bit rusty in the years since Diamond cable put them in. I also noticed that the adaptors i bought from maplins were nowhere near as good as the original ones (even slightly rusty) and so might be worth looking at this?

Cheers for that - I got a 2 way splitter to replace the 5 way and when I went to swap it, the F Plug fell off the cable coming into the house...

That made it marginally better.

But, I've been fiddling with the power supply on one PC and when I had I noticed that having two FDTVs plugged in is what used to cause the breakup. I figured it was because I'd fiddled with the power, so plugged one into the mains - bingo.

Tried it on the other PC, and the support tool showed an even lower voltage (11.04v) getting to the FDTV, plugged it into the mains and the problem has vanished...
