Hi Guys
I recently got an Acer Aspire One for my daughter. Its the Linux one with Linpus Lite, 1gb ram and big hard drive. The machine is quick and connects to my wireless network seemlessly. Although im pretty good with Microsoft based OS, I'm struggling with Linux. Thats not to say tho that Linux isnt the business, and I've managed to install Songbird and I can sort of understand some of the fundamentals of Linux.Anyhoo I'd like to play back avis/divx movies on the Acer, but unfortunately the MPlayer installed plays sound but not video. I tried install VLC but still only get Audio. Could someone please post the linux commands so that I can copy them to the terminal and install some media software.I've trawled around the tinternet but I always seem to fall at the last hurdle. Any help would be hugely appreciated. ![]() Thanks |

I'm not overly familiar with Linpus (replaced it with Ubuntu Ultimate on wifey's Acer One but give this a try.
Download the codec pack using the link then perform the commands in the terminal. w32codec-all Download - Softpedia (link is tar.bz2 [sources] [13.20 MB]) tar xvfj Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2 sudo mv all-20071007/* /usr/lib/codecs/ I think this assumes you download the bz2 file to /home/******/Downloads where ****** is your account name. Anyway you need to put the video codecs in /usr/lib/codecs/ You may need to point your video player settings in the direction of /usr/lib/codecs/ for this to work. Good luck. I downloaded and used the command lines that you posted, and it looks like it was successful. However how do I put the codecs into /usr/lib/codecs/ and point Mplayer to them?? Whilst I'm getting slowly into Linux, its hard not to "think" in Microsoft mode, as normally doing what you suggested in say XP or Vista would be a doddle!! ![]() Sorry to be a pain mate, but any help would be appreciated,

Hi again,
I don't really know, I thought MPlayer would automatically be configured to look at /usr/bin/codecs and would run movies without much user input. I've had a look at my version but it seems to be automatically configured so can't help there. Preferences seems to have some options in the Video tab that you could play with. Even Microsoft isn't as user friendly as you think, I've had no end of trouble trying to get Media Player to recognise various video codecs and have struggled just as much as with Linux so persevere and you will get there. And then there's Vist...........we'll not go there!!! Anyway good luck, if you can't get the hang of Linpus there's always Ultimate Ubuntu. GG
