I've got an XL telly (M phone, M broadband) package with Virgin and am thinking of downgrading to their most basic TV package. I've got a V+ box and a extra room box. Will the REALLY come and collect my boxes when I downgrade or in practice will they just leave them with me? If I retain my V+ box can they switch off its features, i.e. pause, rewind live tv, etc?

They sometimes collect the boxes but most times they just tell you to keep them. No they don't disable the PVR functions of the box but if you wish to modify it REMEMBER to remove the card before you cancel the subscription or they will send a deactivation hit to it and give you a false BK (starting with 6D 56). Their is no other way of retrieving the BK at this moment in time other than a paired card.

I don't actually wish to modify the V+ box after I downgrade with Virgin, I just want it to continue to work as a PVR and also to access iplayer, catch-up tv, and be able to pause and rewind live telly. Do I still have to remove the card before I ask them to downgrade for this to carry on working?

Ahh I see, yes those functions should still work and no you don't need to remove the card but just in case you do decide to have it modded in the future, I would remove it.

if it takes an update, it will require a card with the correct ird to get the pvr functions back

Slightly conflicting advice here. blakey_8 says i don't have to remove the card if I want to continue using PVR functions (but should remove it if I intend to mod in future) and G77 says that if the card gets a hit then only a card with the correct IRD can get the PVR functions back. Hmmm.

As g80878 said, they probably know your name by now anyway so just leave the card in and cancel the subscription. That way you don't have to worry about being caught out and breaking the law etc.
