that might work if you use xp I once swaped a hd from a d550 to a d600 there were some minor problems but were easy enough to fix

This will almost definately not work on Windows 2000 XP or vista it will work with windows 98 but you will have to copy all the drivers for the C400 onto it and reboot about 20 times. You can use the D600 to format the drive then copy the I386 folder from the XP CD onto it, then run a file on it called sys32 or something like that. This takes around 24 hours to install unless you run another dos application first but I cannot remember what its called. As for buying a cheap external drive someone suggested I don't think a standard USB drive will boot on a C400. I am fairly sure you need the proper Dell drive (I used to sell these second hand years ago).
