which OS for a dell D400

hello all i bought a broken dell D4oo laptop, when i say broken it just needs a new hard drive, the thing is the sticker under neat has the product key but the part that says which OS is worn away, its either 2000 or one of the xp's, is there anyway of finding out which it is by the product key ?.
