Hackware works perfectly well on a 4100 and yes, it can be done via jtag.

I meant i'd go with a newer modem, ideally 5101 cos you can run haxorware, it's identical to 250's apart from addition of JTAG so no need to do TSOP job if you brick it

not sure about best but here's what i have been using for three years and its works fine:

Software Version: SB4100-0.4.4.5-SCM01-NOSH-2.03
