Default Card Sharing

Hi

Reading through a few of the posts on this forum I saw someone mention "card sharing" (which I had never heard of). I googled it and found that Wiki had some explanations!

Anyways, I'm not sure if you guys allow talking about it, etc. but wiki said its not illegal to card share so I though you might be ok with it - I apologise if this is not the case.

Well, my question is simply theoretical (esp as I've read members saying that new sky cards are coming out that prevent card sharing) ... according to Wiki, people can share their card's "decoding ability" (i hope this makes sense to techies - clearly i'm not one!) via the internet on forum sites. I'd just like to know how this is possible? Also, does that mean that you can buy a special box that takes no card but simply plugs to your internet cable and then to your tv and you can/could get satellite tv, incl sky?

Finally, I'm not sure how widespread these things may have become as Wiki says that you often have to share you own card (hence pay a subscription) or pay for the forum/internet link. If these are true, why wouldnt ppl simply pay for a legit sub?

Sorry if its long-winded ... i find stuff like this interesting but am not technical enough to understand a lot of whats on the net.

Thanks a lot for your explanations.

I'm not 100% sure myself if this can be discussed here, but here are a few words you could try in google to help you understand it all.

Google> cccam, eurocardsharing, and mydreambox.

Answering some of your questions would break the forums rules.

Basically you need to google card sharing and you will find dedicated forums. Also look for linux recievers, Dreambox, Technomate. It is illegal. People usually do it to gain access to foreign subscriptions.

Regards

C/s is mainly done with linux boxes. Whilst we will allow general discussions any detailed how to do its are strictly forbidden.

You will find many of the old hands refuse to discuss it in any more detail than telling you to use google.

Once you get your head around it the principle is fairly simple, but DONT expect to take a linux receiver out of its box and be setting up a c/s on it the same night unless you have used linux boxes before - they can be right b&st&rds to get to grips with.

Also be aware that if you buy a linux box you dont plug it in and get free card shares immediately. You have 2 routes:

1) a group of friends each buy one card and the group shares access to all the cards between them. Very safe as you can control who has access.

2) buy into a commercial card server. Only a brain dead moron does this as you havent the faintest idea who is running it. To be honest if you get busted and you use a commercial server you deserve everything you get thrown at you.

It isnt unknown for someone to buy into one, and find it disappears a couple of weeks later taking all their money and all their access with it!

Hi Guys

Thanks for your replies.

Honestly there is no chance whatsoever of me even trying to do things like take apart satellite receivers, program in linux, etc. its really less hassle to pay for sky given the amount of time it would take me to learn how to prgram etc (never having done any prgramming etc before).

It is nonetheless interesting and I will read up on some of the things you guys mentioned so thanks for that. The thing that I sort of "liked" (for want of a better word) was the thinking outside the box mentality i.e. cant hack a sky box, can't clone a card, etc. so why not get one card and find a way of sharing it ...

Just out of curiosity ... when they send the signals over the internet like Wiki said, do they have the signals going to a computer first or do they need those linux boxes. The way I picture it in my head is that they use it more like a cable signal ... i.e. it comes in via the internet cable and plugs into a box much like the virgin media box we have.

Thanks again for your replies and sorry if I broke any rules or offended anyone.

PS - I am not surprised that ppl will get ripped off after having paid for dodgy subscriptions. What I am surprised is that its used as a means of prosecuting potential offenders ... is there no chance of entrapment being raised as a defence? ... I mean surely those sites/forums/"services" are marketed in some way (e.g. I wouldnt know where to go and get one and I dont know of anyone who could recommend one).

Both linux recievers and PC's are used.

A Linux reciever connects to a router in the same way a PC would and uses the internet connection to send and recieve data. Once setup you dont need another PC on for the reciver to work.

You still get the satellite signals from your dish, it's not the video and audio that is sent over the internet. So differant from cable.

Sometimes people get a bunch of friends eg: 4 friends + you and share the costs. So if it cost you £46 a month for Sky and £4 to run your server every month 24/7, you each chip in a tenner

SKy isnt a particularly good example anyway - every time Ive seen c/s in use for Sky the picture freezes for a few seconds every few minutes when the keys change

Ive even seen the freezes every 30 seconds!

I'm not going to admit to partaking in such activities but I can say that if you do it correctly, you can get the packages totally freeze free. It's as if you have the card on your own box. Well so I'm told anyway
