Default M0t0r0la Surfboard Cable Modem Future Proofing Questions

Hi all!

Guys... i've read through many posts for the last week and would like to clarify, if possible, a few things about forcing a config to 2Omb. I wonder if someone can help me out with answers to my questions! I'm still trying to get my head around a few details regarding futureproofing my cm.

Specs:

m0t0r01a Surfb0ard sb41OO
FIRMWARE: VxWorks Version: 5.3
Software Version: SB4100-0.4.4.5-SCM01-NOSH-2.03
Current mac: 00028A******
Full access to ha-cks and sniff3r pages!
current connection: 10mb which is being capped to feck!!
5mb'ish downstream most of the time!!!!!!

Just to clarify,

Q1.
If my modem went down again, in your opinion(s), what would be the execution order in which you would try and troubleshoot a fix:

* change network card nic with smac
* change router nic with smac
* change modem hfc mac
* change tftp server ip
* sniff for more macs
* other
* reflash firmware

Q2.
Also how do i spoof the mac of my router as smac only shows an entry for my network card?

Q3.
Lastly, I know my cm may not be able to handle it, but, can i force a 2mb 00:02 mac to 20mb using VXworks firmware on a m0t0r0la sb41oo without setting up my own tftp server. If so do i just change the config .cm file in the "FILE NAME" section in my modem setup (see below). The 'filename' and 'TFTP Server IP' are the only editable boxes on this section!

The info you can see entered into these boxes for 'FILENAME' and 'TFTP Server IP' are editable and they remain there when i turn pc and cable modem off/on. Is the 'FILENAME' over riding the 'ISP default Config File' in the case below?

----------------User Defined Configuration File--------ON HACKS PAGE
File Name : H65e844d*********.cm <<<<< this is editable, does this mean i'm forcing custom config?
TFTP Server IP : 10.137.103.3 <<<<<<<<<<<<< editable
ISP default Config File : H1dda516********.cm
Maximum Download Speed : 10240000 bps
Maximum Upload Speed : 512000 bps

[[[[[[[CHANGE CONFIG FILE BUTTON]]]]]]] <<<<<<<< DOES CLICKING HERE 'FORCE IT' or do i have to set up a tftp server to accomplish a force?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I also get another section called "Download File from ISP's TFTP Server" and can enter the following:
* File Name <<<<< editable
* TFTP Server IP <<<<< editable

When would it be appropriate to use this feature? Does this mean 'v1rmins tftp server' or one that i or someone else could/would have set up on webspace or something similar?

Thanks in advance! I think everything is starting to become clearer but just need a few opinions to ease my mind and my bloodshot eyes.

Cheers!

I've found out that i can change router mac by going to routers browser page 192.168.2.1 and spoofing the mac of the Belkin router to that of my nic/network card mac. So question 2 no longer needs to be answered.

Can someone please answer or help on question 3 for me as i'm still only 80 percent sure on the whole am i OR am i not forcing already?

Sorry to post again but it wont let me edit my main post anymore! Also ignore question 1 as it is not really neccessary or needed!

Thanks.

This is your problem m8 - ISP default Config File : H1dda516********.cm -

it's a randum config file. If it started with an A you are only half dynamic. But as u got a H it's full dynamic so u got no chance of forceing you own config file. Hope this clears things up a bit 4 ya.

Cheers for that Matthew!

On my sniff page IN SB4100 BROWSER these are a few (most recent) of the************configs that showed on sniff page
A63927***********.cm (10.137.103.3)
A71889***********.cm (10.137.103.3)

Since this time the sniffer PAGE ONLY HAS FOUND about 10 cm configs filenames starting with H... i.e.... H0626b*********.cm (10.137.103.3) (most recent)
and others:
H6e4de************** (10.137.103.3)
etc

All i've had since not getting A***'s anymore are the H's on my sniff webpage.

I've have lots of macs i hav'nt tested yet with config files included with them the configs above are all from the sniff page only!

On my my sniff page I've got another 19 cm's that start with 'A' and continue with random numbers/letters (strings)

Please could you try and answer the following Q's for me if poss?

* File Name : H65e844d*********.cm seems to hold/stay in the filename box even when rebooting pc or cable modem, is this overiding the H1dda516********.cm

* My question is, is there a way to change H1dda516********.cm TO A71889***********.cm for example to force? Are the A***'s still working?

* Would that solve my prob? If yes, could i then force my own config file?

* Is it possible to force with the sb4100 to your knowledge?

* Do these still work 62.252.32.20 & 62.252.32.21
62.252.32.21
---------------------------------------------------------------------

In Cardiff by the way and got the unreg.cm recently after 2 years of 10mb! Many sleepless nights later and im back on 10mb although it seems to be capped to sh1t!

Thanks again for your time!

Sorry I was just writing a post but it disappeared.

I was quoting:

Quote:
u got no chance of forceing you own config file
This isn't directed at any individual person, but I wish people would stop saying this. I get the config files in the above mentioned fashion which apparently means that my area is fully dynamic but I CAN STILL FORCE whatever I like.

The only thing is that the only way I can do it is by autoserving the config file. Entering the filename and letting the modem grab the config file every time the modem boots does not work. The modem gets stuck at IP COMPLETE.

So please, if something does not work for you, please don't tell others that it will not 100% work for them, as it is working here for me now.

If you are trying to force, are you autoserving or just entering the filename? Give my method a go and see what happens.

Oh, btw, if you want some future proofing, I'd recommend a newer modem that is more capable of the higher speeds!

But other than that, you can't really fully avoid getting kicked off when they try and have a purge!

Strange!....., my connection has been flakey and intermittent over the last hour or so!!! Modem rebooted itself too!! I have also had to use 'repair' in network connections 3 times to fire the connection back up again!!

Could you clarify this quote for me please buddy i'm not sure if your saying it works for you OR if it does not work as you say the 'modem gets stuck at IP COMPLETE'

[quote]
"If you are trying to force, are you autoserving or just entering the filename? Give my method a go and see what happens."

I'm entering the filename H65e844d*********.cm which holds but seems to be being overidden by the ISP default Config File : H1dda516********.cm like in the example below: (Is this correct?)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
File Name : H65e844d*********.cm <<<<< this is editable, and it stays put after reboot,close/reopen browser etc.
TFTP Server IP : 10.137.103.3 <<<stays put after reboot etc.
ISP default Config File : H1dda516********.cm (can't edit this)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I will try and autoserve soon! I plan to spend tonight going through all the posts and figuring out how to autoserve as im not sure if i need to host the file on my pc or to setup a tftp server on some webspace?!?! Are there any good threads that you know of which has a concise guide to this?

Thanks for your input mate!
