phone vm and ask them to sort it out, thats why you should always pay a sub.

and before anyone else gets to it

rule no 1 - never mess with subbed gear.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Just a quick question. When you say he is getting 1 meg do you mean comparative speed? A 10 megabit connection will give a speed of around 1 mega byte. The general rule of thumb is take the advertised speed and divide by 8 to get your actual speed.

Just an after thought or 2. Is he a new convert to the 10Mb medium or is he been 10Mb for a while?

Does he download a fair bit?

The reason I ask is that the new medium 10Mb has a lower ratio before traffic management kicks in. So if he goes over that his speed will drop.

He speed they advertise is in mega bits not megabytes so in your case the max download speed he can achieve wouldnbe about 125 Kbps. If that's the case then he has a prob, but if his speed is 1024 Kbps then all is working as it should.

I read your post mate and was only offering constructive input. I've had many dealings with vm cs in the past and tbh they don't have a clue. I was once told they got a good ping from my modem when the cable in the street was actually cut. So I never take whY they say for granted.

Fair enough you say your and your mate are clues up but that doesn't tell me how clues up you are. There are many so called experts who don't know the difference between Mb and mb. I apologise for assuming that you are the one of these folk.

You came on the board looking for help and some advice was offered. It didn't help and that's fine but the least you could do is say thanks guys but already know that or tried that already. It's just common courtesy and costs nothing. And the outcome of that could be people not wanting to help you.

I'm on many boards and used to mod this one a long time ago and in my experience if you can't thank someone for their help no matter how good it is or isn't isnt well recieved. Being a senior member you should know that. Don't just assume because I'm a jnr member that I don't know what I'm doing.

God, first day back on the boars and I have to teach someone ettiquete.

Apology accepted mate. No harm done.

This goes back to what i was saying about vm cs. Surely if it was a config problem with the modem settings then all they need to do is send through a new config file like they would do if they were upgrading/downgrading your service.

As i asked earlier has he recently upgraded or changed his service in any way? If that were the case then maybe that's the cause.

Have you checked the modem config page? It's been a while since I've used it but it will tell you the speed the modem is configured to and if I remember correctly the snr is in there too which will give an indication on signal quality.

How did you come to the conclusion it was the modem settings mate?

I'm not sure if it's relevant or will even work anymore I seem to remember someone having speed issues a long time ago and changing the proxies sorted it out. As insay it was a long time back and don't even know if it works anymore but worth a try. I can't remember what the proxy addresses are but you can change it through Internet settings in control panel I think. I can't check it up at the mo cos I'm on my phone and not at pc. This also explains my spelling too lol

as we have both said c/s could not change a plug they just follow a trouble shooting list with what my friend has said i think so
no my friend has been on 10Mb for 4 months now since they changed to 10/ 20/ 50/ only on f/o he did receive his new config then he does download a bit so he does know when there is a prob
