Post Illegal downloads by the young drop

Is the message finally getting across or is there another reason for the slight drop in the amount of young internet users who regularly download and share illegal music? Last year the figure stood at sixty three per cent, while this year the figure so far is standing at sixty one per cent. According to a survey [...]

First of all many young people buy a dodgy disk for £2, copy it and give the disk to some friends. They may even "chip in" Secondly, internet speeds can be too slow for torrenting, thirdly young people get the blame for electricity bills for the computer, when in all honesty if a computer was running 24/7 it would cost £10 a month to run And not all PC's run 24/7. It lessens the blame a little if your PC isnt on just for torrents if you catch my gist. Finally, the people in the survey were probably different to the sample from last year How about they at least interview the same people for say five years through secondary school ? They would have a more solid argument, even if is still flawed

Torrent speed are more affected by the number of seeds, than internet speed. Whilst it is true that if you have a slow connection you will get a slow download, the more people seeding a file, the more data you will download at once. If you download a torrent that has many people seeding and they have fast upload rates, you will download it quicker than a torrent shared by one person with a slow upload speed even on a 1mb boradband connection. Additionally Torrents are not the only source for illegal downloads. There are many file sharing sites out there and newsgroups which people will use.

'Illegal downloads'.
I thought in the UK it wasn't illegal to download music. Only to 'share' it.
So, technically, the 'upload' is the problem area.
But if the media-controlled society we live in continues to try and do just that, even with their bad grammar and misinformation, what do you expect from its people?
Don't get me started on the rich few taking from the poor many.

And, anyway, I agree with both the above comments...

Nope illegal to download copyrighted music, to share it is worse!

The companies tend to target the uploaders because if they stop the uploaders, then they stop many many downloaders. Its easier to prosecute an uploader.

Sorry - I still think you'll find downloading ISN'T illegal under UK law.
Especially if you are taking from a non-UK site.
As there are no cases to comment on, (for example, the 'TV-Links' site never went to court (AFAIK?) as it was 'trademark infringement') it is difficult to know what would actually happen - and so the industry avoids it.
Much like the banks did.
However - there are several laws protecting copyright holders for distribution of such material, and that is where the problem lies.

I'll search for a case, but I have seen any about copyright theft, which would be the case, wouldn't it? Hmmmm...
