Default Using A Good Quality USB Memory Stick With The Starview 4 USB

Hi Folks.

I have been reading on many internet forums about the 8882 error that people are getting with the Starview 4 USB genuine receivers.

To this day, i have never received a 8882 error because i used a good quality USB memory stick.

You may be wondering what a good quality USB memory stick is? I will explain this to you now.

A good quality USB memory stick is one that has a true capacity size & is not hacked to show a higher capacity value, than what it actually is.

For example, a hacked memory stick may show a capacity of 4GB when plugged into the computer, but its actually physical memory capacity is 1.8GB. These are the types of memory sticks that give you the 8882 error when upgrading the firmware on your Starview 4 USB receiver.

The majority of people have no idea that the USB memory stick that they are using does not have a true capacity as shown in "MY COMPUTER".

There is software freely available on the internet which allows you to test your USB memory stick & will identify for you whether it is of good quality or of bad quality.

The software is called H2testw. It can be downloaded from http://www.heise.de/ct/Redaktion/bo/...2testw_1.4.zip
You do not need to install it, just open the file & it can be used straight away.
  1. Drag "h2testw" out of the .zip folder, and then Open the program.
  2. Once it has been opened, you will see 2 radio buttons prompting for your language preference. Choose "English" if you're an english speaker.
  3. Make sure that your flashdrive has already been connected to your computer. If that has been checked, now click "Select target". Browse for your flashdrive letter there, then click "ok".
  4. Now press "Write + Verify", and the testing begins!
  5. After the test has been completed, go into your memory device, and delete the .h2w files which were used to test your device, since this program does not delete them automatically. Each file's maximum size used for testing is 1GB.
The test might seem like a lengthy procedure at first, especially if your device has a fake capacity. This program is legitimate. I already tried it on a real 8GB flashdrive (Integral), and I was really happy when I saw that it passed the test. However, all my other devices I bought from Hong Kong, all failed the test. When the test has been completed, there will be a screen that will output the results to you. Below is an example of one of my tested 4GB Sandisk USB memory stick.

Warning: Only 4086 of 4091 MByte tested.
The media is likely to be defective.
1.8 GByte OK (3974912 sectors)
2.0 GByte DATA LOST (4393216 sectors)
Details:2.0 GByte overwritten (4393216 sectors)
0 KByte slightly changed (< 8 bit/sector, 0 sectors)
0 KByte corrupted (0 sectors)
4 KByte aliased memory (8 sectors)
First error at offset: 0x00000000794e0000
Expected: 0x00000000794e0000
Found: 0x00000000794df000
H2testw version 1.3
Writing speed: 1.84 MByte/s
Reading speed: 5.84 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4

Notice the "Warning" at the beginning of the report. Don't let that throw you off, that warning will only pop out if you have files on your drive or memory device while testing. It's always better to perform the test with an empty drive. Once you see this: "The media is likely to be defective." that's when you should start biting your nails. In this particular test, "1.8 GByte OK (3974912 sectors)" means that 1.8 GB is ok on my drive. "2.0 GByte DATA LOST (4393216 sectors)" means that the 2.0 GB of data was lost during the testing. This indicates that this particular device's true maximum capacity is 1.8 GB, and not 4.0 GB, as the seller claimed.

From my own experience, alot of reputable UK based USB memory stick supplier are unknowingly selling there customers hacked/fake merchandise.

This software is now used by all industry experts for testing.

Just imagine saving a university dissertation or a school project on a hacked/fake memory stick & later finding out that file was never actually saved. This proves costly on the long run.

This is the reason why the 8882 error occurs. I have actually done extensive testing in this area with the Starview 4 USB receivers. I installed the Starview 4 USB software on to a hacked/fake USB memory stick & tried upgrading the software. The progress froze at 10% & went no further. Eventually when i power cycled the receiver, i received the 8882 error.

Alway use good quality USB memory sticks. From experience the genuine Integral USB Splash Drives work the best. To this date i have never had an 8882 error when using a genuine Integral USB Splash Drive.

I hope this guide proves useful to all forum members.

Cheers
