Default Current best receiver for Satellite on PC

Hi Folks,

I'm very new to this subject and am still trying to get my head around all the options. I want to be able to view mainly German free to air satellite TV on my PC. I've just ordered a
SkyStar 2 TV PVR PCI card for my PC and now I need to get hold of a decent satellite receiver. Can anyone recommend a good and reliable receiver that I can use with this card on my PC? There seem to be so many to choose out there and I'm bound to pick the wrong one! I don't need high def yet as my PC isn't set up for it.

Any help / tips would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Alpinenut.

The SkyStar is a reciever in it's own right. You don't need a reciever to work with it. If you want a reciever for a TV, talk to Southern Satellite one of the forum sponsors.

Wow! There you go. That just shows how little I know about his subject! That little card seems pretty good value for what it does. Thanks Rick1980.

I have an old dish still up on the roof from when I used to watch the analogue german channels. Am I right in saying I just need to change the LNB on this dish to be able to use it again with the new digital satellite channels or is it a better idea to just change the whole dish and start again?

It depends how tight you are.

Just changing the LNB, would be as cheap as chips.

But if the dish is in really bad condition, with rust, you're better off changing it.

A new dish sounds like a good idea as the existing one does look a bit rusty to me. I've heard you can get multiple LNB's on the same dish. Is this a reasonable alternative to a motorised dish to get a bit more flexibility? For the German channels I know I will only need the one LNB but if I'm going to have expense of a new dish I might as well build a bit more in for even more channels!

Yes you can add lnb's to a dish. Triax do a multi holder for their dishes. A TD78 should get you 13e, 19e and 28e with no problems. Set 19e as the focal, and 13e and 28e as the offsets. It won't give you as much flexibility as a motor but at the same time there is no waiting for it to move position. You will also need a diseqc switch so the reciever can choose between lnb's.

I'll just recommend you PC soft to install and watch whatever you'd like on your (probably) 21 inch monitor!
