Default Modem and ROuters?

okay i dont really know how to phrase the title so i left it as that. im completely new to this but i know quite a bit about eurovox n starview but nothing about cable.

ANd thoes who want to flame or be cocky, i have chipped in this forum and helped people! im not just a selfsih person!

I did a search and found Haynes Cable Modem guide. I understand that u need a MAC address from the same area as myself but a different UBR.

In section 2 it says how i can sniff for MACs.

I just need help at this step. I have a laptop. And a virgin TV package (That im PAYING for legally) but just TV alone. No internet with it.

Now first thing im guessing is i need to buy some kit. Ill need a modem and router. Can someone first explain the difference to me? I used to have internet from AOL. that was simply ONE lil box that connected to my phoneline and then connect to back off my computer. So it was PHONE LINE -----> The black box -----> To my computer.

I know theres the ambit cable modem, which im guessing i have to buy off ebay. I can only find ambit 250.

SO bassicallly, what do i need to buy? and how do i hook it up?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
the signal comes down the co-ax cable. It gets translated by the modem. The modem can then go straight into the 1 PC. If you want to connect multiple PCs or go wireless you will need a router.

There are two types of routers, ADSL and DSL. For your setup you will need a DSL one.

If you are only connecting the one PC you do not need the router.

All the best

yes thanks for that.

SO in the guide it says

"One point I will make when scanning for Macs is that you must not be connected to a Router or have a firewall enabled, you will just get back blank results as a few peeps from forums have found out, it can be done but its best just to unplug modem from router and do the scan."

So i will have the COAX cable going into my modem (ambit 250) and then an ethernet cable going from my modem to my computer/laptop.

is that right?

I never use my normal mac for sniffing as it always gets kicked of. So I use a 2meg and save the 20s.
