I had the same problem with my advent (utterly awful laptops). The battery was apparently not charging even though it was showing as charging, had to take it into the shop and it was the port for the power cable that was dodgy so the battery wasnt recharging thus it turned itself off all the time.

I would also check temperature sensors, as they may be faulty (and thus the cause of the problem) and also fans within the laptop. Remember, dust is the Pcs/laptops worst enemy, dust traps warmth, warmth fries chips and in turn causes a costly repair or replace for the user. Glad you got it sorted tho. P.S - the dvd case idea is smart, I made a little bracket/base for my laptop from some scraps of wood in the garage, sanded it down sprayed it black, looks mint. It simply raises the entire back half of the laptop by 2 inches, allowing alot more air-flow, and in turn, a slight, but not great, performance increase from the laptop itself! It oddly also raises the keyboard to an angle similar to that of a real keyboard, so makes typing on the fly much easier too!
