I used different cables with my Western Digital Passport, all of which worked fine. The one that comes with the drive however is a little thicker and seems a much higher build quality.

thanks for the replies. Tried various cables without success, high quality one and regular one. All produce the same error "one of the usb devices attached to the system has malfunctioned"

yes have done mate. On this one running xp SP3, my laptop running XP SP2 and wife's laptop running vista all seem to produce the same errors. Think the drive is goosed to be honest and have noticed the sellers profile says "this seller does not accept returns" (only noticed this after the purchase...duh!!!)

It dont matter on Ebay if the seller says "does not accept returns" .. If its faulty you can return it for a full refund .. If seller refuses simply open a "Item not as described" dispute within Paypal stating its faulty, not fit for purpose, the dispute process will find in your favour, you'll be requested to send it back via trackable means (Special Delivery) and then Paypal will refund your money ..
