Default Newbie needs advice pls - Do I need to subscribe?

My partner and I have just purchased a new home and moved in last week. I noticed there were Telewest points in a few of the rooms but wasn't sure if they were still active as we didn't ask the previous owners.
Luckily I had a modem with me and plugged it into one of the points and found that the Internet works! I'm currently typing this message from my laptop in the new house.
So the Internet works and we're not even paying for it.
Now my question is this:
If I purchase one of these starboxes and connect it to one of the points here, do you think it will work since the broadband is working? Or do you think I will have to contact Virgin to subscribe to the TV service?
i.e. If I take the cable out from the back of the modem and put it into the starview box, do you think it will work?
Any advice or help here is much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to TechWatch

TV and broadband come down the same line so if one is working the other should work also

As said above, as long as you have an active feed (your broadband line) coming into your home, you can split the connection and use whatever modems and boxes you want .

I don't have a box yet to feed the cable into. Don't have a landline at the moment although I haven't tried plugging a phone into the socket yet

What's a cab cleanup?

What would you guys do if you were in my shoes? Would you contact vermin and tell them you've just moved into the new property and then subscribe to the lowest package?
Thanks
