it mite be set to some thing by default to get people to set up a password as there is so many people with open networks out there.
you best bet is to connect using a wire to start with and go to
192.168.1.1 in your web browser or mite be 192.168.0.1
you should then come to a configuration page for your rooter.
once there most rooter have a quick set up thing if not then look throw the links there to set up a WPA key.

i dont realy get what your saying,,i carnt plug the wireless one straight into the cable wire as it dosnt have the cable insert..i have a normal cable modem and instead of pluging the ethernet cable into the back of the
laptop ive put it into the wireless router and all the lights are on and its giving a signal off ,,my laptop is picking it up but it wont let it connect,as its a secure network ,is it the peolpe who owned it last who put the key lock on it or the last internet supllyer or is it my end and my flashed modem thats the problem ?? thanks

if its second hand then it will be the last owner that set the pass nothing to do with you internet supplier. you could still do what i said to set it as it don't need to be plugged in to the cable modem to set up the key.
