Hi, I'm new to Techwatch and to forums in general, so apologies if this is posted in the wrong section. I have already opened what appeared to be an inappropriate thread with regard to help I'm looking for as reseach for a novel I'm writing, so I'm going to try again without causing any trouble!
Does anyone know if it would be possible (hypothetically obviously) to disable tv by corruting the updates that are sent to tv decoders in people's homes? Would that work for sattelite and cable? I can put you in the acknowledgemts if you help guys !

Must be a bloody odd novel you are researching

I would suggest that you take you questions to NDS, they seem to know all about things like that.

Sounds more like an act of terrorism , not a novel , What an odd subject to be researching
. Where did you get that idea from ? Sky or cable overcharge you this month or something ?

There was the case of the Gemini image messing up the DMM clones last year, now if you google that it might just get you going mate.

A Gemini style attack isnt going to work on 10 million Sky boxes though as it would require access to the firmware, decompiling it, recompiling it in a different way to put the trojan in then putting it on the upload streams. Repeated 40 or 50 times for all the different variants of the Sky receiver......
You would be better off employing a few thousand grunts to run around with wire cutters to snip through peoples lnb cables!

Supposed cable could be done easily by targeting the download site if they still use them?? but don't know if that would only be in one area? the only way I can see you knocking out the entire sat system would be to disable the satellites them selves ??? probably just as easy to disable the national grid. Freeview would be essayer as at the moment the signals are so crap turning a light on and off will interrupt the signal in most houses. And know I'm not a terrorist.
