That just means that Sky/FA will now send out a mailing to all pubs. The big judgment will be for the use of EU issued subscriptions.

I don't understand how ignorance of the law is a defense. If I go and shoot someone, I will not get off by saying I didn't know it was against the law.
What am I missing here?

It is a case of 'ignorance' of a different kind --- well, sort of. A component of the offence is that the defendant must have used the non=Sky equipment to 'dishonestly' receive "Sky programmes". If you were "ignorant" that using a foreign subscription is receiving "Sky programmes", then you cannot be "dishonest".

The expression "ignorance is no defence" will apply if the defence was that I did not realise it is an offence to watch "Sky programmes" dishonestly. This is different from: "I did not even know I was watching Sky programmes, so I couldn't have been watching dishonestly." Honest, Guv!
