Hi Everyone, just purchased a Phoenix Programmer from TMC. I have a Laptop and a desktop. I thought the desktop had a serial port, but apparently not. I now have the problem of deciding what my next step should be. I have read that some people have had problems with USB to RS232 converters.
I need to update my MOSC card in Nagra Edit 4.1. I guess as I prefer to use the laptop, will the above converter work or am I better of buying a PCMIA to RS232 card (how will this work for updating my card, flashing if ever needed etc). Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. I cant believe it, I was almost certain the PC had a serial port . I have spent so much time reading and came to the conclusion that the TMC phoenix card came highly recommended for MOSC programming. The other thing I would like to confirm is the PSU for the programmer. Some people have mentioned that you can use a 12v PSU (I have a 12V, 1.2A supply), others recommend the AMBIT modem supply which I would have to buy. would my 1.25A 12V supply suffice or will it damage my programmer or shall I buy a 10V ambit modem supply ![]() JIM |

Hi
Some people can get it to work some struggle. The 1st one I bought wouldnt have it at all, the 2nd I bought (a cheapo one) works fine for programming and unlooping although maybe a little slow. The programmer wont need a psu as it will have a usb connection but the unlooper would if you are talking about an unlooper if you need to unloop card to get in for which I use the modem psu. I have used a 12v suply for this as well and its been fine but up to you. Regards. |

Hi, double check you PC. Some motherboards have the serial ports, you just need to connect the port that sits on a separate plate/header.
You can check the mobo details online or check in bios if there is an option for comm ports. |

I just bought an older Dell Latitude laptop of e-bay now every thing works great as my new laptop with vista was a pig.
But its just more expense when you are starting out.

Thanky Yusuf, the phoenix programmer is from TMC, it has no usb please see attachment, hence why I was asking about the psu.
I guess the 12 volt one may work then. With regards to the PCMIA to Rs232 card for the laptop do you think it would be more reliable than a cheap USB to RS232 converter. the PCMIA cards are quite cheap on ebay.

Hi
I see what you mean, you would need a psu, as far as the pcmia is concerned I belieive its much better than a usb convertor although I have never used one. Regards |
