Does anyone know a free download manager software? Something like Download Accelerator Pro (DAP) but it must be free. I have tried Netleech but after some time it start to give errors.

The free Download Accelerator is a good download manager. It was what I used to use when I was on dial-up. But now that I have cable, downloads are easily managed. I just haven't tried downloading movies and big-sized softwares like Vista Beta. Firefox has an extension that manages downloads as well, called FlashGot. I'm an IE user, so I don't know how well it works.

I've noticed some downloads warning against download accelerators. Perhaps the wider use of broadband makes them more likely redundant for most users?

A lot of download managers and download accelerators actually connect to the download server multiple times, so you're actually using as much bandwidth as maybe five other people. That's good for you, but bad for them, so they'll warn you off. Many places will ban people with too many connections.
