Confused but learning

Normally I'd say "Yes" and simply advise adding a cheap PCI firewire card. Unfortunately, a quick Google on Dimension 3100's shows a reference to no free PCI slots inside and only a single free PCI-e x1 slot instead. This still allows you to use a firewire card if you want (this one is the cheapest I can find quickly: Startech 2 Port Pci Express Firewire 400 - Card - Ebuyer ) provided you're not already using the slot for something else.
I've never seen a Firewire connector that works through USB (I think your only other connection type available), and seeing as Firewire is faster than USB I don't think it's technically possible. Damn Dell and their proprietary motherboard designs!
