Default The importance of upgrading to the latest firmware version

Up until a short while ago I had been using a Scientific Atlanta Webstar 2100 with Haxorware Rev 32 installed on it.

My friend needed a modem, so I sold him the webby and dug out an Ambit 250 with Rev 31 on it that I had lying about the place.

Connected it up, and got connected to the net with all my usual settings. On the face of it there is no significant difference been the two different versions. The emphasis is "on the face of it".

So, I had been connected for a while, and then I kept continuously getting disonnected. The modem would shut down and the light would keep blinking to show it was downstream ranging. The only way to get it back online was to unplug the power and plug it back in again. I also could not seem to force any more. The modem just would not sync at all when I was auto serving the 20 meg business config that I wanted to use.

I was thinking to myself that there had been some huge changes and I began tweaking all my settings trying to fix the problem. But alas, no matter how much tweaking I done, I would always get the same problem.

Then I thought to myself "hey, I was using Rev 32 on the other modem!". I didn't think that it was going to make any difference by just changing the firmware, because as I said before that "on the face of it" there are no significant differences between the two firmwares when you look at them other than a couple of added options on the settings page.

So I reflashed the modem with the Rev 32 version, and as if by magic all of the problems thus far have disappeared (touch wood, inb4 modem reboots now!).

I'm not offering this as a fix to anyones particular problems, but I notice that some people are still using the older versions of Haxorware and seem to be having some similar issues with being stuck on ranging etc. So if you are not currently using Rev 32, and you are experiencing some issues, you may not see any big differences between the two firmwares but I would say that there must be something good under the hood that seems to eradicate some of the problems that you are experiencing, if any at all, and you should upgrade the firmware of the modem to the Rev 32 version and see if it fixes your issues.

Depending on what version of Haxorware you currently have installed, just use the Firmware Upgrade option in the modems config menu. I *think* the only version where the upgrade option is borked is the Rev 30 version and you would have to do it through telnet, although that option is not difficult at all, I do understand that some people that are less technically confident will be put off by it.

TLR - If you're having some problems and aren't currently running the latest Haxorware, get it upgraded, it may help you, even if you can't see any obvious reason why it should.

It's off topic, but according to one of the mods I spoke with their database got hacked and they took the site offline.

Contrary to popular belief over there it has nothing to do with me.

What made you post that here mate? Any more questions along those lines, please PM me instead.

If you download Haxorware from Haxorware.com included in the package is a guide to upgrade from your current shelled firmware via telnet.

Hope that helps.
