i`ve always used convertX to burn dvds from avi sources. The 800mb file you downloaded was probably ripped from dvd and compressed within an inch of its life anyway, so using the high quality encoder settings will not improve the quality. Go for the medium quality encoder option in the tool settings and see if you can see any real difference other than its about 2 hours quicker to encode/burn.

....extra ram always helps.

i use convertxtodvd 3 to encode then nero 7 essentials to burn the vobs - convertx does everything in one simple step but i got occasional burn errors.. since using nero7 never once had a problem
