Default Five is considering taking all its channels pay tv!

Five is considering taking its main terrestrial channel into the pay-TV market as it investigates radical survival strategies.

Sources close to the broadcaster revealed the plan is part of a potential strategy to shift its entire channel portfolio (Five, Fiver, Five US) to pay.
It is one of several options open to Five as it looks to embrace the pay market, as acknowledged by Five chairman and chief executive Dawn Airey at the recent RTS Cambridge Conference.

At the event, Airey admitted the “pure broadcasting business is pretty much a loss leader”.

Five has just been moved onto a public Mux on freeview to comply with its public broadcasting contract so I don't see haw they can consider charging for it. As for the others, would you pay for Fiver and Five USA???

If its a toss up between going pay or closing down due to the dire financial circumstances affecting the broadcasting industry they will go pay in a flash..

I did find this line in the report VERY interesting:

We are looking to consolidate or potentially go pay

Wonder which of the channels is the worst performing - they could easily jettison one of them to cut costs. (Five USA maybe as its got expensive yank imports on it.)

If it came to a choice given to us, I too would say dropping Five USA be best, I have yet to actually watch anything on that channel

You probably wont get a choice as it will likely be bundled with a channel that you want. Bundling seems to be the broadcasters way of making sure that the crap channels survive !

If the broadcasters didnt bundle, two thirds of the scrambled channels would disappear overnight - theres no way most of them could survive if folks were allowed to pick and choose the channels they subscribe to.

I would miss nothing on Five, why have they got Five USA, the whole lot are nothing other than yank rubbish? Maybe if they were not paying so much for the yank rubbish they would not be in the position they are in now, I never watch any of their channels at any time.

Regards Wez
