Default Eurovox modem for broadband

A bit of a long shot, was just wondering if there is eurovox equivalent in the modem world? I figured that as broadband comes down the same line as the tv, and, that most cables are still live when service has been cancelled (just the cards are zapped), is there a modem equivalent that can get use boradband, like a eurovox can for tv? Just for educational purposes of course.

Erm. Not exactly, but sort of.

You would need to get yourself a modem yes, but AFAIK, Eurovox don't manufacture them.

You would be best getting a Webstar 2100 by Scientific Atlanta, they are pretty impossible to kill.

You would also need to do some reading and learn to flash firmware onto that modem. (Have a little search there is alot about in the cable modem section of the forums)

I would recommend Haxorware as the firmware of choice, but have a read again and you will decide which if best for your purposes.

Let us know how you get on mate

I only suggested the webstar because if you brick it there is j-tag to recover it.

The ambit 250's/255's do not have this option, and thus once bricked, tsop needs lifting - not for the faint hearted

EDIT: Also several of the surfboard modems from motorola have j-tag too, so thats another option.

Sorry for the newb question, but when you say 'bricked', do you mean that vgin send zap signals down periodically and brick the modem (leaving some modems dead) or 'brick' meaning you mess up the firware flashing yourself and self 'brick' the modem.

Is it the same story that modems are like eurovox receivers and can't talk back to vgin, or is there a danger that getting a broadband without paying, the modem could grass you up?

The latter, bricking a modem is just that, buggering up during the flashing process (in most cases).

Quite the opposite in terms of talking back though. Theoretically, they could find you using a cloned modem, but it's unlikely. Modems talk to the network in order to properly syncronise with the network, only then can it establish an IP address and speed parameters etc.
