Default tlds - why some are more popular than others

It seems to me that it really shouldn't matter what the extension is at the end of the domain name - whether it's .com .net or one of the hundreds now available. But, I understand that .com still seems to be what everyone wants. Why is this?

.com is the domain extension the average person in the street remembers. I have lost count of the amount of times somebody has given me just the text of a domain name and assumed it is a .com or given me the domain name as a .com when it actually ends in a different extension. To most a computer is for sending jokes and buying off fleabay, anybody who can do anything else with them should be looked down upon with distain. That is until their fleabay portal breaks down and then they want you to drop everything to fix it.

Why ? the Computer has been one of the most successful inventions of the 20th Century it has provided 100s of 1000s of jobs also has become the main communications device in todays homes and schools. I use my Home Computers for entertainment, keeping in touch with friends, purchasing goods, and all my banking needs .

I have no idea why these people think like that, probably because they haven't the intelligence to understand what their computer is doing. I work from home and my job is 100% computer based, whenever anybody comes round I can guarantee they say something like 'how can you stand to be on that for so long' or 'when are you going to get a proper job' or even 'what game are you playing, it looks boring'.

People who know how to get their computer to do anything other than the quick game of spider solitare is considered a geek. I honestly get tired of someone who has trouble operating their toaster buying a pc because they saw an advert that said they should,. They then ask me to set it up for them and everytime they want to do something on it they phone me to come around and do it for them. When they ever do use it for themselves they break it and I have to fix it. All the time I am doing this for them they tell me they 'haven't got the time to learn how to use it, as they have a life'.

Ok rant over, I only intended to answer your question but then I got thinking of the people I know and got angry lol. Anyway to answer your question, yes I agree computers are a great invention. Its people who refuse to learn that are the problem.
