cleanliness is the name of the game with soldering.

meths, ear buds, them little wire brushes and fibre glass pen are all a must

Also try to use a 13v iron, on this type of PCB anything with higher voltage will lift the tracks.

I've had the err 40 problem and fixed it. It comes from the 24c512 chip not making good connections to the tracks that it should be soldered to. It's not fatal for the box. Put the connections right again and it will be fine.
