Default Latest Scam!!!! Beware Paramax P-510 Home Theatre System

Soooooooooooooory,

This post will be much shorter now, I just wrote 1000 words on this and Opera just disappeared.

I'll try my best.

Guys pull up in petrol station in white van, open up the back and have these home theatre systems with price tags reading £2,200.

They claim that have had one too many accidentally delivered to them and are selling it before they get back to the boss so that they can keep the money for it themselves.

No all they wanted for it was £400, which is a HUGE discount on some hight quality home cinema kit that retails at over two grand! Great! Well, thats what most people would think anyway.

This gear in question is the Paramax P510 home cinema sound system, all singing, all dancing etc etc. Thing is, the name Paramax is VERY similar to the name PANAMAX who really make REAL high quality home audio systems.

As I said above they claim to have had an extra delivered to them and are flogging it off otherwise the boss will find out and keep it for himself. Because it is surplus and they just want to earn a few beer tokens for themselves these guys are selling it at a MASSIVE discount. They even have an "invoice" from the delivery company that shows two were meant to be delivered but they have the third extra one sitting right there in the back of the van which was "accidentalliy" shipped to them.

Very plausible scam indeed. They even have nice shiny glossy brochures that list the MSRP price as £2,200. Now, greed gets the better of you and you think "holy mother of god I really gotta buy this at the massively discounted knockdown price that these guys are offering!"

First off, immediately they are prepared to come down on the price to £300. Amaaaaaaaaaaazing!!

First off, I thought the gear had been stolen and they were just trying to punt it to some buyer on the street. Now at this point there is myself and a few other people standing by the back of the van. Now I'm always on the ball and was considering getting myself a deal and then sell it on at a profit. Now me being a tech savvy kind of guy, I research everything before I buy, and I'd never heard of Paramax before so I asked the guy what the deal with them was. He said that it was professional standard gear used by actual cinemas. Fair enough, as there are brands you probably havent heard of thet are very very good. Take for instance REGA. They make absolutely amazing sound equipment at very high prices (that do really reflect the quality) all hand made at a work shop in Essex..

Now, not being one to take someones word for it, my tech savviness comes back into play and I whip out my Nokia 5800 and fire up the Opera web browser and google search Paramax P510 home theatre system. On their actual website, which was very pro looking, the MSRP price was just as the guy said £2,200 pounds, that would be enough for a lot of people to have the deal sealed and signed there and then.

A further bit of reading leads me to where I find out about the similarity to the brand name of PANAMAX, a company that really does make high end sound gear, and this is how the guys run their scam, purely because of the similarity in the names.

Greed will kick in for a fair few people and they won't be able to resist the opportunity to get something worth thousands for just a few hundred quid and they will hand over their hard earned money and buy one of these Paramax systems.

Well, here is where the scam is. They do NOT retail for bloody £2,200, not even close to that at all. And they are not even worth the £400 the guys were trying to sell them for. On that note they aren't even worth the "knockdown" price the guys were willing to drop to which they were saying was £300. These systems are worth about a hundred quid, and according to reviews, are actually well worth buying if you can get one for the proper price. The reviews say that the sound quality is pretty good and even better than most other generic home theatre systems that can be picked up in places like Asda and Tesco and such.

The scammers are relying on your greed here. Basically you see this gear that's labelled as being worth over two grand, they even have glossy brochures to back this up and the "manufacturers" website with the prices on their to further back their claims up, and you seemingly have the opportunity to buy it at a massive discount. I would have even considered buying one to resell.

In reality, as I said above, the systems are worth around about a hundred quid give or take, and would be worth buying one if you could get one for that price, which I'm sure you can,as they obviously get them from somewhere. From what I read they are manufactured in China and are just made from generic components with generic soundchips etc etc and are nothing special by any stretch of the imagination.

So guys, if you get offered this kind of thing with the same story line, then either turn it down, or if you do want one, then offer the actual real value of the system! This will probably **** them off lol.

I think I upset them because this guy had actually got his money out the ATM ready to buy one off the scammers, but I showed him the google search on my phone and told him that the value they were stating was waaaaaaaaaaay off and he would be better buying from eslewhere. The guys didn't even respond, just jumped back in the van and done the off! Probably to find a better location with some more unsuspecting mug punters.

TL;DR Just remember guys, if it seems too good to be true, 99% of the time it always is! Sorry if I've missed anything but I basically just had to write this twice lolol.

I'd be interested to hear your views on this type of scam. Playing on peoples greed is a very sneaky tactic used in this manner don't you think? I personally think that you deserve what you get if you jump in to something like this without researching your sh1t first!

I agree with your final point (you deserve what you get if you jump in to something like this without researching your sh1t first) but have yet to come across the scam personally.

Keep seeing the usual scams though, like the hacked sky box etc, fun times!

Thanks for the heads up mate, was a good read!

I remember a similar scam a few years ago now, the same type of thing with loudspeakers, cheap ones that looked like B&W or similar decent ones.
And the VCR's that didnt work when you got them home.
I bet they managed to find a buyer elsewhere!

Hi guys a similar sort of thing was happening in Manchester no long ago where guys were selling brand new digital camcorders from the back of a van and they would open the box to show you it gen and all the boxes were sealed of course but those that paid their hard earned money when they got home and opened them it was just a very expensive brick !

To make it feel right they had put bricks inside the boxes !

OLD OLD saying " Buyer Beware " comes to mind !

Its similar to a scan that an italian tried to pull off in a motorway services several years back. I was sitting eating a sarnie when this guy pulls up in an expensive people carrier loaded with what looked like expensive leather jackets, he told me that he had been at a fashion show and needed to offload the jackets at £25 each (normal price something like £200) as he did not want to take them back to Italy with him anyway I knew of similar scams involving watches so declined.
