CAN Bus (Controller Area Network)

While i was in the pub with Delambo the other night we talked about the CAN bus amongst other things. Chatting about girls would have been more interesting but you know how conversations drift after a pint or two...

Anyway, as some of you may know, CAN busses are rapidly replacing the wiring loom in most modern cars. A CAN (Controller Area Network) bus is a two wire differential twisted pair bus that is extremely resistant to electromagnetic noise, hence its suitability to the automotive industry (HT leads are very noisy). In fact it was designed by Bosch specifically for the automotive industry but has been adopted by other fields.

Anyway, for those Auto Electricians and other curious individuals, a very good insight can be found on the Wikipedia site.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus

the entry also has some very useful links to the Bosch standards, and other tutorials.

Sorry my first post is not more fun but i thought Delambo might be interested in this. Maybe something a little more fun another time.

I have a self study in pdf form for any moderators interested.
Audi and others use the CAN for engine gearbox and immobiliser called drive CAN which runs faster than the infotainment CAN. MOST bus is a fibre optic system used on the new A6 and A8 for the DVD, Phone, CD, radio and sat nav.
LIN bus is a cheaper system used alongside the other systems.
The A8 has 74 odd ecus fitted, the use of CAN reduces the weight of wiring looms needed.

Great system like you have said with less wires, weight and reliability
But a total nightmare to diagnose a system with 20+ ecu's.
Gone are the days of using the avo. Not always but some of the time
its shotgun diagnosis with the old get one off that sales car in the yard
and swap it.
