There are only 7 HD channels from virgin media..

Channel 4HD, Nat Geo HD, MTVN HD, FX HD, ESPN HD, Living HD and BBC HD

ESPN HD on my box is perfect, same as the rest of the HD channels, dont understand why you getting crap pic on espn and not other channels.
if it were on all, would suggest checking HDMI lead but 1 channel?? very strange.

I find FX can be a problem sometimes in terms of making the picture
4:3 instead of 16:9 but have had no troubles with ESPN in terms of quality, that said, I don't watch it particularly often, much prefer the programming on Nat Geo HD!

Hope that's of some use

Not everything on the HD channels is native HD - there is a lot of upscaled SD on them.

I'll add my 2p worth, i have 2 v+'s and 7000hd, and i do agree the hd on the 7000 is worst than on a v+, on the v+ it is sharp alot sharper than the 7000 regardless of upscaling etc

I've noticed that too m8, but only on cartoons like 'family guy' and 'american dad'. I think they're broadcast in 4:3, as the 'FX HD' logo extends into the black bar at the left side of the screen.
