mate it's simples..
first of all do you have a router? I assume so if your wireless.. Make sure both the laptop and the desktop are in the same workgroup.. to check this right click on my computer and go to properties.. and click the computer name tab. Check the workgroup. Normally by default it will be WORKGROUP. Once this has complete (if changed will need a restart). If the things you want to share with your computer/laptop are within a folder you can share the folder. To do this right click on the folder you want to share and click sharing and security (this is based on an XP machine, Vista is similar, might not be worded the same) Tick the boxes to share etc.. and you'll notice an icon of a hand will appear under the folder, this means it has shared successfully. You can do a thing called a mapped network drive, which will create a direct link on your computer to the laptop or vice versa, which will restore the link everytime the computer switches on, provided the laptop is as well. To do this go into my computer, click tools then map network drive...choose a drive letter (can be anything) then click the browse button, locate the folder you have just shared and click finish .. now you have a direct link to the shared folder of the computer/laptop you want to access stuff from..i hope this helps |

ok, i have indeed got a router
both computers are indeed WORKGROUP it seems that vista is significantly different to xp on this as the directions you gave were different anyhow i right click on the folder i want to share and click "Share..." it then opens a box where it asks who i want to share with...i select "Sc00by" and it takes a minute to set up once complete it says it is shared but i dont see anything to say it is shared(no little icon as you said)...and when i click on"show all my shared files" it comes up empty both my pc and laptop are named "Sc00by"...is that a problem? other than than i am stuck EDIT**...ok looking at this now it seems like this is only to allow me to share with other users on this computer....ie if there is more than 1 user account(which there isnt) you can share a folder between the 2 accounts Last edited by Sc00by; 28-10-09 at 05:58 PM. |

yes that is a problem.. there will be a conflict on the network buddy.. make sure both computer names are different..
i think on vista when something is shared it has a little bar underneath the folder which means it's shared (i can't remember if it's the hand icon) if your still stuck let me know.. i'll boot into my Vista partition and check write a more descriptive guide.. just to help me.. you have a computer and laptop.. can you detail which operating systems are running on which devices? and which you want to share on etc? Thanks |

Did you resolve this problem?
If not here's a possible solution: Make sure network discovery, file sharing and public sharing is on Turn off password sharing Move files to C:\Users\Public\Documents Right click on the file Documents folder select properties Go to sharing tab select share then add Guest and give them co-owner status From the laptop access HOMEGROUP/WORKGROUP then select the pc and log in as Guest. You should now have access to the file. |
