Was the incoming cable stream logged and then decrypted? Then, using this information fixes were made available or is it more complex than that?

Far more complex than that. The chips were completely reverse engineered by NDS and all of the rom code was dumped.

Once the rom dumps were leaked into the public domain it was possible to look for holes in the code that could be exploited.
The actual RSA encryption of the messages used in N1 has never been hacked, so to that extent it is still as secure as the day it was launched.

I wasn't thinking of decrypting or cracking anything because I know I wouldn't get anywhere. I was just being curious that's all.

The first thing that needs to be done when hacking a new smart card is to peel back the layers of silicon and read the ROM + Eprom under microscopes.

Once you have these details they can be analyzed for any possible weaknesses.(simple lol)

Watch this YouTube - How to Reverse-Engineer a Satellite TV Smart Card it will give you an insight as to whats involved initially!

Then when youve got your lab set up get cracking with that Nagra 3 card blakey

Thats my understanding of it but im sure our resident experts can explain better.

only a rumor but ...............the last time it was hacked .is it true they had to bring som1 over from china to put it undera microscope! & he cracked it ...........for a big lump of money as well ??? any1 herd the same thing

The intial hack of the Nagra cards was rumoured to be done by NDS

I can imagine China/Korea playing a part in any N3 hack as they have become accustomed to massive sales of 3rd party receivers eg Eurovox,Starview ect.

It would certainly be in their interest

to hack it!

NDS is the encryption used by Sky,Virgin use Nagra, Sky use NDS

Google NDS and you will find their site
