Hi, i have had the starview usb for a while and i have a iomega 320gb, 2.5 self powered drive attached, it lags before recording and sometimes takes ages to load when i press hdd, although this can be annoying my biggest problem is recorded files. If i play them they are fine, but if i fast forward the recorded file, it will regularly freeze completly and i have no choice but to reboot the box.
I had firmware 1.10 installed, but have reverted to 1.07 as i read on here its more stable, however the problem persists. I dont mind if its just the drive the starview does not like the drive i will buy a replacement drive, what i want to know is if anybody has been using a particulier drive with good success over the last few months, so i can give that one a go. One more thing i would like to add is i formatted the drive with paragon partation manager on the pc.I tried formatting in the starview but after clicking format there is no timer saying how long is left etc, i have left it for hours and the controls on the remote wont function unless i reboot Thanks Last edited by charlie2000; 03-11-09 at 09:16 AM. |

Hi,
I used to get this problem with mine too mate. Do you switch the HDD on and off as you use it or just leave it on? I leave mine on now as I find it tends to be a lot more 'stable' that way as when I used to switch it on and off for recording, it would freeze, not record etc. I also thought that the STV4 would only work with a HDD up to 300gb? May be wrong on that though. I have a Trekstor 150gb self powered HDD and It seems pretty consistant. I formatted mine on the STV4 without any probs. Sounds a lot to do with your external HDD to be honest. Hope this has helped.

Thanks for the response mate, i have been leaving it on all the time, because as you say its more stable yes.The main problem is if i fast forward advets etc on a recorded file it will freeze. Would you do me a favour and fast forward some of your recorded files for a few minutes and see if you get any freezes, if you dont ill get one like yours as at least i know it works. When you formatted yours on the starview how long did it take and how did you know when it was complete, i get no indication on my drive Thanks |

It did it when I first got it beginning of this year but I reformatted it and leave it on constantly and it seems to be fine now. I do sit there cringing sometimes when I am fast forwarding in case it sticks but it never does now!!
Another thing I do is FF then let it play then FF a bit more. Mine formats in a matter of minutes mate. Sounds like your HDD to me.
