Does it show up as playing on screen (i.e. does the time position of the song change)? I've had one of these where although it would acknowledge it was playing (i.e. the play/pause icon showed play), it never actually moved from position 0:00 on the song.

It could be the headphone jack, quite a cheap DIY fix, but I think that it's unlikely that it is the headphone jack since the fault occurred after a software update. It's the cheapest swap though, so if you're confident with opening up your iPod it's almost certainly worth trying.

It could be the logic board, which you can pick up for between £25 and £40, depending on how long you want to wait for it, or pay around £60 to get it replaced.

It could also be the hard drive, but I find this unlikely. Hard drives can be purchased for less than £30 for a DIY replacement, around £60 to get it done for you.

I've done loads of these, and I'd be quite happy for you to send it to me for a free diagnosis - I'd just want you to cover the cost of returning it. Give me a PM if you want to do this, or if you fancy tackling it yourself, I'm happy to give you any guidance.
