Default The benefits of up to 8Mb* BT Broadband

Up to 8Mb* BT Broadband should provide you with a noticeably faster download speed and the ability to use multiple services more efficiently across your BT Broadband connection.

8Mb broadband (8Mbits/s) is approximately 160 times faster than standard dial-up internet (0.05Mbit/s), and 4 times faster than our current fastest broadband service (2Mbit/s).

Using multiple devices

The main benefit of a faster broadband is the ability of your connection to maintain greater quality when running multiple tasks simultaneously and 'new wave' internet services like BT Broadband Talk (making cheap voice calls over the internet), BT Fusion and BT Vision BT's new digital television service.

The speed difference

If you regrade to the faster service, the difference in speed will be most noticeable when you're using your broadband connection for high bandwidth tasks and applications such as:
  • multiple users on one connection
  • music and video-streaming
  • video-conferencing
  • large file downloads
  • sending large email attachments
However, when you're using your connection for 'lightweight' online tasks like surfing and email, the increase in speed may not be as apparent.

* Up to 8Mb BT Broadband is subject to availability and survey. 'Up to 8Mb' refers to maximum download speeds only (upload speeds are slower). If your line won't support 8Mb, we'll offer the best available speed on your line. BT Line or non-cable line required. 12 month minimum rental will apply, starting from the date of your regrade. Minimum computer specification applies. Usage allowances apply. Terms and Conditions apply.

Please note: If you're using a modem or router not compatible with up to 8Mb download speeds, you may need to buy a new router. These are available as part of the order journey when you regrade to Up to 8Mb* BT Broadband.
