How deep you dig, depends on how high you go. 1/4 in 3/4 out seems to work satisfactoraily. My current one is about that ratio, and where I had it before was like that too. But it will depend on soil type, mine is solid chalk.

For my 8ft pole I buried it about 2 ft. Though if it was any shorter I'd have still buried it about 2ft.

i have 3 poles in my garden, with a 3'' pole which is 4ft in height,(once used for 1.6mtr) that is 4ft in the ground, with 2 of my others poles which are 2'' one is 4ft high and the other one which is roughly 10ft height, they are roughly 3ft deep with cement and broken brick or stones, the one which is 10ft heigh has stood up well against all winds for 16e with no probs, but you have to make sure the base is solid, give it some sweat and toil then it will be ok.

Oh, I forgot, when you put the pole in, you must put a threaded rod or something like through it at the bottom, to stop it twisting round in the hole.

I used a scaffold 'double' coupler, which I used to clamp a short length of scaffold at the bottom instead, as I couldn't be bothered to drill a hole for a threaded rod.
