If it's not booting from CD-drive from the Bios it mostly likely is a faulty CD-drive, if it's not a fancy design you maybe able to buy a generic drive and replace it fairly cheaply but may not look as pretty as it does right now.

Ok thanks, is that why the usb drives have disappeared aswell? or are they a seperate issue, (man my laptop is pants)

Thats a seprate issue mate, also check in the bios if the CD-drive is being seen if it is then it's a good indication that the drive itself (CD-ROM) is faulty.

Hey guys just an update, for some reason today in my computer there was a cd rom icon even though ive got a dvd rw. So I quickly put the xp disc in and did a clean reinstall, and it works fine now. What that means I guess is that it was not the d faulty dvdrw but something else. Glad its fixed though. thanks guys for the help
