No effect, all work at full speed.

Different gateway (UBR) so sub and clone are on different gateways, which avoids ARP / frame routing weirdness

so i pay for my vm .so i have a good working mac . my son lives 2 miles down the road on another ubr. i believe i could clone his modem with my mac and all would be well. is that correct. i also have another son 1 mile away on a different ubr , so i could do the same again with no detriment to myself. is that correct. thanks for everyone who helps

Maybe, maybe not. Depends of you are Docsis 1.0 or not.

If you got a newer ambit (255,256 MAC address starts 00:14)/if your MAC is docsis 1.1 then forget it m8.
You currently cannot clone your docsis 1.1 MAC address as there are difficulties with certs for Docsis 1.1. If you did clone, you would never get online...BUT

Unless you make a perfect 1:1 clone, from your own firmware in your modem and flash it to their identical modem, then that would work. All certs are already generated etc...But then VM might one day know that someone has let their modem be copied, and prob come a-knockin or you all get cut off. The first person they would come to, is the legit paying customer, as the MAC is tied to that property/account

All this is covered elsewhere mate.
