I decided to take out hard drive and format it in external case.Have re fitted it and tried to install windows from scratch but it says cant install windows as no hard drive fitted,is it likely to be a motherboard fault ?.

You might need to load the SATA drivers for your motherboard, assuming that it is a SATA hard drive.
What Operating System are you trying to install?

if there isnt legacy option or an option to change the SATA options in your bios then you will have to load the drivers manually, you could try nlite to slipstreem a copy of windows or you could use a usb floppy drive, what o/s are you installing
