from reading reports, am i right in thinking all the moded boxes will be no good soon, as encryption by vm will make them all obsolete

Nobody knows 100%, VM will have a timescale I am sure but problems occur and time lines can slip but your guess of July 2010 for everyone to be on the new encryption is a good bet.
