When you are familiar with this **then** you can start trying to open whatever is available at that time.

If you take it out of the box and try doing the advanced stuff on the first evening you will soon get discouraged with the box. Somewhere on the forum is a discussion with a lad who bought 2 boxes and was trying to set up a card share so his brats could watch tv in their bedroom off his Sky card.

He didnt like the idea that he was trying to do something exceedingly advanced on his first day, and two hours of trying wasnt going to be anywhere near enough.......

The fact he said his brats were screaming at him for their telly probably didnt help his attitude towards a DB
hi All,
is it worth getting 1 of these boxes with a sky dish?
i have this dish already and want to start messing...

It depends what you want to do with it.

I would say no, it is not worth getting if you only have a Sky dish. It should work straight out of the box after a quick scan for the FTA channels, no messing required.

A DB isnt really a very good good receiver to launch yourself into the satellite hobby - see previous posts.

That's all you will realistically get with just a sky dish.

A 1m motorised dish, you can't go far wrong with that.

Get a TM5200 or something really easy and a Dreambox if you want, you can learn the satellite basics with the Technomate, giving yourself time to play with the Dreambox.

AS is one of the experts.

I set up my TM600 (Linux) for the FTA on all satellites pretty easily, it took a few hours initially. Some things are really good and are far easier than on a standard box, like changing the channel list for example, due to the internet connection.

But other things that are really easy to do on a standard box, take ages with the Linux.

To be honest, I've not got to grips with mine properly yet, as it needs time spent on it, which as yet, I have not spared.
