Default Wireless home & 60 meters away?

Hi, I've just googled this forum and I have a task, can someone advise me please?

I currently have pipex broadband, typically 5 to 7.5 Mbps on a BT line connected to my PC via a usb modem. I would like to do two things.

1. Wireless in my house & garden

2. 50 or 60 meters across the road I have a granite farm house converted into three summer holiday lets, I'd like to provide a wireless facility for my guests too. I do have line of sight but I think I would need to boost the signal again to get cover all around the building.
I could have another BT line installed but it seems such a waste as the flats are only occupied for half the year.
Thanks

you could always use a directional antenna.
my netgear routers have been flashed with openwrt/12 dbi directional antenna.
personaly, i do not use them as an AP. mine are in sta (client) mode.

root@OpenWrt:~# cat /etc/config/wireless
config wifi-device wifi0
option type atheros
option channel auto

# REMOVE THIS LINE TO ENABLE WIFI:
#option disabled 1

config wifi-iface
option device wifi0
option mode sta
option ssid linuxhub
option encryption psk
option key NTAYMe8J6M4O2Z$hrUtkslfaQER,3+PPQZym4\\9G-XIXPzDuixbIR1jgSgiP\,
option network wan

root@OpenWrt:~#

getting back to your post. you could always use a directional antenna.

Thanks for your replies, I have a fairly good knowledge of electronics but I'm afraid my knowledge of wireless is lacking.

I know what it does but I don't know much about the various options and systems.

So perhaps if we take the first point i.e. wireless for my home: Can you recommend a system that would connect my PC to laptops, netbooks etc to allow at least internet browsing, baring in mind that the next step is to extend cover i.e. point to point bridge across the road

Thanks

I’ve now installed a Belkin N1 wireless modem router and now have wireless in my house using a Belkin N1 usb adaptor with my laptop.

The signal across the road is to weak on non-existent for coverage in the holiday flats, I’ve ordered some Ethernet (RJ45) cable so that I can try the router in a better location, I think this may enable some more coverage but there will still be some trees in the way. I could position a repeater (booster) in between. Any thoughts?

Or if I go down the point to point method can some one start me off with a system that will easily connect to the Belkin wireless just purchased? This probably is a bascic question but I don't even know how a point to point would connect, for instance would it have a ethernet cable connection or would it be wireless?

Thanks

Ok I’ve looked into this a little more if you had an old Linksys wireless router it can act as a bridge/repeater, flash it with dd-wrt its o/s firmware and configure it.
In theory you could then put it into a water proof box and place it in your garden make sure the aerial is outside the box/container, this will then extended your wifi range to the other house
i got this info from the dd-wrt site wiki section

have you tried devolo homeplugs, it gives you internet through the electrical sockets of your house, for example plug the devolo into the socket of wall and attach ethernet cable from the devolo to your wireless router. then in another room where you want internet plug in the other devolo and attach ethernet cable from the devolo home plug to your pc.

this works well if you have poor wireless signals in your home.

i use one in the shed in my garden, where i have sockets available.

Welcome to the world of dLAN® ... devolo AG
