Default Sky+ box for FTA channels

I have just switched from Sky to Virgin and was planning on using my Sky+ box as a free to air receiver. I have been told, however, that I will lose all Sky+ functionality (ie live pause, recording). Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Yup All recording functionality disappears unless you pay Sky a tenner a month "recording tax".

Any recordings you have of programmes from encrypted channels will also become unavailable as they need a valid card to decrypt them.
