Default A quick question about soft mods

Hey,

I apologize in advance for a seemingly noob question. I've spent the past hours or so reading posts in different forums, and I'm more lost than when I began.

I bought a soft-modded Wii over the summer. It's been good, and the new game I've purchased (Wii fit) played perfectly. Then I got Beatles Rock Band.

I haven't updated the system since I purchased it out of fear the it'd get bricked. But the Beatles game goes directly to the dreaded black screen because my Wii needs updating.

My question: If I update online through the system, will my Wii become inoperable? If my Homebrew Channel is the only casualty, that's fine. But will I be able to play burned games as well as new ones?

If there's a risk, what's the best alternative to update my system? I live in Canada -- if the region makes a difference.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!
